The Tale of Two Wolves: A Lesson in Mindfulness

Today, I invite you to listen to a short but profound Native American story that delves into the complexity of our emotions and the transformative power of mindfulness. This tale serves as a reminder that our inner world is a reflection of what we choose to cultivate.

We all have a good wolf and a bad wolf battling inside us, and we can tame them by choosing where we focus our attention. When we “feed” positivity — by being kind, grateful, and loving — it not only flourishes within us but also impacts the world around us. But if we dwell on negativity, it becomes a dominating force, shaping our reality.

Nourishing the Good Wolf

The good wolf represents our potential for love, kindness, and compassion. By actively exercising these qualities, we strengthen them in our lives. It’s not about ignoring the bad, but rather making a conscious effort to nurture the good. Every small act of kindness or positive thought adds up, gradually tipping the balance in favor of the good wolf.

Acknowledging the Bad Wolf

Every emotion, whether positive or negative, helps us grow. For example fear is designed to protect us, yet it can be destructive if we let it take control over our life. The bad wolf isn’t something to kill, chase away or ignore. Instead of fighting, which only empowers it, we should acknowledge its presence without judgment. By doing so, we calm it, and in time, no longer fueled by our resistance, it may surrender and lay down beside us.

The Power of Mindfulness

Mindfulness allows us to notice our thoughts and feelings as they arise, giving us the power to choose which wolf to feed in any given moment. Through it we can strengthen the good qualities, while gently releasing those that cause suffering.

So, which wolf will you feed today?
